Ronald Lam, CEO of Cathay Pacific Group, visited Beijing on August 17 to emphasize the airline’s focus on the Chinese mainland market and passenger needs.
The number of flight attendants proficient in Mandarin has grown to over 2,500 out of a total of 6,000, and the group is actively recruiting mainland pilots and flight attendants.
The airline faced challenges during the pandemic, leading to substantial losses over three years, totaling HK 33.7 billion (US$4.3 billion). In 2020, passenger revenue plummeted, and in 2021, it dropped by 61.6 percent. However, the group began to recover in late 2022, increasing its passenger capacity.
In 2023, its performance surpassed expectations, recording a net profit of HK$4.3 billion in H1, a remarkable turnaround from nearly HK$5 billion lost in the previous year.
Lam stressed his commitment to the Greater Bay Area, with plans to restore passenger capacity to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2023.
