Huawei and JAC Motors are collaborating on a new electric people carrier with mass production to start in Q2 next year, priced at around one million yuan (US$140,000).

GUO Mingqi, an analyst who is well-known for the accuracy of his inside information on tech companies, said the MPV will use Huawei’s Wenjie ecosystem, which so far has only been seen in AITO, an EV marque jointly developed by Huawei and automaker Seres. Guo said the Wenjie MPV plays an important role in Huawei’s long-term auto strategy.

In response to Jiemian News’ inquiry, a spokesman of Huawei said he was “not aware of the matter.” JAC Motors had the same answer. Seres did not reply to inquiries.

Huawei started working with JAC Motors in 2019 and planned in-depth cooperation. The two want to create a new generation of platform technology together. China State Construction Engineering is to build an industrial park in Hefei where Huawei and JAC will work on vehicle development.

Seres is the only EV maker currently using Wenjie, but Chery, JAC and BAIC are expected to use the system soon.

Seres has been struggling with sales. In July, it sold only 4,240 EVs, down by almost half from a year ago.
