CATL, the world’s largest battery maker, has made a new foray into the aviation sector by acquiring a stake in the industry. On July 19, Shangfei Times Aviation Group was set up by China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University enterprise development group.
While the specific shareholding ratios of the three companies have not been disclosed, the move has sparked speculation that the partnership foreshadows an assault by CATL on the electric aviation field. Neither CATL nor COMAC responded to Jiemian News’ inquiry.
COMAC, established in 2008 in Shanghai, is involved in research, production and testing of civil aircraft and has delivered the ARJ21 regional jetliner and C919 large passenger aircraft.
