As the summer holidays arrive, the scorching heat has not deterred people from traveling. Over the past month, subway ridership in major cities has increased. Last week, total ridership in 30 cities reached 89.5 million, nearly 4.6 million more than the same time last month.
With the first summer vacation since the pandemic, Beijing has become the preferred destination for many families, resulting in high demand for tickets to attractions like the Forbidden City. Hotel prices have also soared. In Shenzhen, the influx of tourists and commuters led to a record-breaking 9.33 million subway rides on July 7.
Lanzhou's subway saw the most notable rise, up 38 percent. Additionally, most major cities have witnessed a notable increase in subway ridership, with Chengdu exceeding 7 million rides and Xi'an reaching 4.4 million.
However, there are also some cities where subway ridership has declined. Harbin's subway had the worst decline, with a decrease of 22 percent.
