On Friday, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station’s huge digital screen read “all tickets to all destinations are sold out today.” It is the first time since the station opened in 2010 that all tickets have been sold out. Even China Railway staff can’t get tickets home.
China Railway said about 558,000 people are expected to leave the city via the three major railway stations today, more people than traveled at Spring Festival this year. More than 650,000 people will depart stations on Saturday, a new record.
On the roads, about 54.4 million cars are expected to hit the expressways, up at least 73 percent from last year. A record might be set on Saturday.
In Beijing, the old Summer Palace Park, also known as Yuanmingyuan Park, warned tourists that tickets for the first three days of the May Day holiday (April 29 to May 2) are all sold out. The same is true of tickets for the Great Wall, Yonghe Temple and the Summer Palace.
In other provinces, popular destinations have similar sweet troubles.
