Tesla has started production of the Model Y at its Shanghai factory, with plans to export the cars to North America for the first time, according to a source cited by Reuters on April 24.
The design and testing of the car are geared toward North American markets, and the company aims to produce nearly 9,000 units this quarter, according to a production memo.
Last weekend, Tesla announced a cheaper, rear-wheel-drive version of the Model Y on its website, which will be available in Canada from May to July. The new version is priced CAD 10,000 lower than the long-range version currently available in Canada. Both the new version and the long-range version are eligible for a CAD 5,000 purchase or four-year lease incentive, according to an update on the Canadian government website last Friday.
