Work will finish on Legoland Shanghai Resort in Q4 and the theme park will open its doors next year, according to Merlin Entertainments, the British company that manages the resort.
Covering 318,000 square meters, the resort sits in watertown Fengjing in Shanghai’s Jinshan District. It will have a theme park, a hotel, restaurants and shops.
Shanghai Legoland will feature a product line inspired by the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West" and the legend of the Monkey King.
Scott O'Neil, CEO of Merlin Entertainments visited Shanghai on Tuesday and made the resort his last stop. He said the company would continue investing in China, one of its biggest overseas markets.
Merlin Entertainments also has two Legoland projects under construction in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, and Meishan City, Sichuan Province. It has plans to build a Legoland in Beijing as well.
