JIA Yangqing, the software developer who created open source deep learning framework Caffe, has left Alibaba Inc. Jia confirmed it on his WeChat moment on Thursday as he wrote a farewell letter, indicating his next step is to start up a business on his own.
Joined Alibaba in 2019, Jia served as a VP and the president of Alibaba Cloud's Computing Platform business unit. In 2022, Damo Academy, the tech research arm of Alibaba, launched open source platform ModelScope developed by teams led by Jia.
Prior to Alibaba, Jia worked for Google Brain and Facebook.
Sources said Jia’s business will focus on the AI framework, and he is close to securing first-round financing.
