Fudan University’s chatbot crashes hours after launch

On Monday night, QIU Xipeng, a professor from Fudan University announced his team had developed MOSS, a ChatGPT-like chatbot uploaded to a public site for “testing.”

A few hours later and the bot crashed.

Thousands of excited Chinese netizens besieged the server and it just couldn’t cope.

Qiu’s team apologized on Tuesday, saying they hadn’t expected the new bot to attract such attention.

The chatbot bears the same name as the super-intelligent quantum computer in the Chinese sci-fi blockbuster Wandering Earth.

MOSS is an immature large language model, the team said. Due to the complicated Chinese content flux online and a lack of computing resources, MOSS has a long way to go before it catches up with ChatGPT.
