US communication company Zoom is laying off 1,300 employees worldwide, 15 percent of its workers, said founder and CEO Eric Yuan in an open letter on Wednesday.
Many Chinese employees confirmed the mass layoff with Jiemian News. An engineer from Zoom’s Hangzhou office said he saw the letter morning and was told to pack up in the afternoon. He only joined the company in April last year.
“We worked tirelessly and made Zoom better for our customers and users. But we also made mistakes,” Yuan wrote in the open letter. “We didn’t take as much time as we should have to thoroughly analyze our teams or assess if we were growing sustainably, toward the highest priorities.”
Zoom stopped selling or upgrading its new products and services in China last year.
