Aliyun to expand overseas business

Aliyun, the cloud-computing arm of Alibaba Group, is to invest 7 billion yuan (US$990) over the next three years in overseas markets and build six new service centers in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Southwest Asia. The company has also announced new collaborations with over 30 overseas enterprises.

Aliyun is the leading computer clouding company in China but rivals are getting closer. In Alibaba’s Q2 fiscal report, Aliyun contributed 17.7 billion yuan in revenue, up 10 percent year-on-year, compared with 29 percent a year before.

Aliyun was the first Chinese cloud company to investigate the overseas market, and in the past year, has built seven new data centers in Asia and Europe. But Tencent, Huawei and UCloud have all announced plans to expand across the globe. Last year Huawei Cloud saw its clients in Southwest Asia grow by 156 percent.
