Online ride-hailing platform Didi Chuxing has been fined 8 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) for data security violations. CEO CHENG Wei and president LIU Qing were each personally fined one million yuan.
The Cyberspace Administration of China found that Didi started illegally collecting user information in 2015 and has since gathered millions of pieces of personal data including photos, phone numbers, facial images, occupations, addresses, travel intentions and other data.
Didi’s data processing activities threatened national security, CAC said, adding that Didi had not fully cooperated with the investigation.
In a statement posted on Weibo, Didi accepted the penalties and said it will have self-examination and rectification.
