Tech giant Tencent is changing the structure of its online video business unit.

Six groups have been dissolved, most in Tencent Sports. Around 100 employees have been relocated or fired.

In July 2020, Tencent Sports transferred the broadcasting rights to the NBA to Tencent Video along with the US$1.5 (us4210million) billion bill. In April last year, MLB started to stream on Tencent Video instead of Tencent Sports. Tencent Sports still owns the broadcasting rights to the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, Chinese Football Association Super League (CSL) and FIA Formula One World Championship.

Tencent has slashed its sports streaming team for a good reason. The Champions League and Europa League are ending and Tencent has no deal for next season and no one knows when the next season of CSL will kick off. Sports events due to be held in China, including the Hangzhou Asian Games and AFC Asian Cup, have been postponed or canceled due to China’s Covid rules.
