Freight trains collide on elevated Tianjin railway

Two coal trains crashed into each other on an elevated railway near Tianjin around 1pm on Thursday, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

One of the trains overturned. Cars were seen to have fallen from the elevated railway in a video clip circulating online.

The Daqin Railway connects Datong in Shanxi Province and Qinhuangdao in Hebei Province. Daqin Railway is an A-share listed company that derives 80 percent of its revenue from freight. In 2020, a quarter of China’s coal was transported on the railway.

Tianjin authorities are at the scene. No casualties have been reported.
