On March 21, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 132 people crashed in southwest China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Boeing stock fell nearly 4 percent on the news to close at US$185.890 (1,183.12 yuan). The cause of the crash has yet to be determined.
The Boeing 737-800 is used by more than a dozen airlines in China, with more than 1,000 aircraft accounting for around 40 percent of all civil aircraft. In the past 20 years, Boeing has delivered close to 5,000 worldwide, nearly 45 percent of all Boeing deliveries.
In 2019, when 737 airliners worldwide were subject to emergency structural checks, 36 were found to have structural cracks. The China Eastern aircraft in question has only been in service for seven years.
