Didi Chuxing is to make as much as half of its freight transportation team redundant, a former employee told Jiemian News on Monday.
“I got a bonus last year and compensations too,” he said. “It is not the worst-case scenario as mass layoffs go.”
Didi started its freight business in June 2020 with two divisions, one much like any other operation, and the other providing logistics for Didi’s community group-buying business which has almost ceased to operate.
Layoffs started in November. As community group-buying failed in December, hundreds were let go. The headquarters of Didi Freight in Hangzhou will shut down and the team will go back to Beijing, where Didi is based.

More than 90 percent of Didi’s revenue comes from ride-hailing. Neither community group-buying nor freight contributed much.
