Two manufacturing plants run by Foxconn Technology Group in Shenzhen suspended operations on March 14. The plants manufacture and assemble iPhones and gadgets for Apple and electronic products for other brands.
Foxconn has more than 40 plants on the Chinese mainland. The company has deployed backup assembly lines in other plants to minimize the impact of the indefinite closure.
The plants cover 5.25 square kilometers. One of them, the Longhua plant was Foxconn’s first factory on the mainland. The plant is surrounded by living quarters and canteens for as many as 200,000 staff.
All public transportation has been halted in Shenzhen and people are asked to work from home until March 20.
