Huawei is in talks with German automaker Volkswagen about a joint venture on autonomous driving, according to German media Manager Magazin.
An insider source said the negotiation had been going on for months, it involved technology systems Volkswagen is not yet proficient in.
A source close to the matter told Jiemian News that SU Jing who resigned in January as the head of Huawei’s intelligent driving team will join the new JV, funded and owned by Volkswagen using Huawei technology. Huawei has asked for about 100 billion yuan (US$16 billion) but Volkswagen has quite different expectations on price.
Chinese media Yicai reports that some employees from Huawei’s intelligent driving team have been asked if they would like an internal job transfer.
Volkswagen declined to comment. Huawei has not replied to Jiemian News’ inquiry.
