China proposes stricter rules for Antarctic tourism

China is considering new rules to regulate Antarctic tourism, including a permit system, obligations for tour operators and travelers, and penalties for violations, an official said on Monday.

HUANG Haihua, spokesperson for the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, said the measures are included in a draft revision of the Antarctic Activities and Environmental Protection Law currently under second review by lawmakers.

Under the draft, operators would be required to obtain permits before organizing Antarctic tours. Violations could result in fines of up to 1 million yuan and a ban of up to 10 years from applying for related permits.
