Shanghai kicked off the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) on Wednesday, unveiling upgraded transport, water and waste systems to ensure smooth operations at the National Exhibition and Convention Center.

The six-day trade fair, one of China's key events to promote foreign investment, runs through Nov. 10 at the venue in the city's Hongqiao district.

Municipal investment group Shanghai Chengtou said it has completed key road upgrades, expanded 24-hour emergency support for water supply and drainage, and introduced digital waste-management systems to achieve "daily collection and clearance" across the venue and nearby areas.

The measures also include enhanced traffic coordination around the Hongqiao transport hub, as well as real-time monitoring of sewage treatment and drainage facilities to prevent disruptions.

Chairman HANG Yingwei said the group is operating to "the highest standards" to support a safe, efficient, and greener CIIE.

Separately, Shanghai Tower and Pujiang Cruise jointly launched a sightseeing program linking the city's tallest skyscraper with Huangpu River cruises, offering panoramic views of Shanghai's skyline during the expo.

First held in 2018, the CIIE has become one of China's leading platforms for global trade and investment, drawing thousands of exhibitors and visitors from around the world each year.
