China's BeiDou tech breaks GPS dominance in atmospheric sounding

China has developed a homegrown BeiDou-based atmospheric sounding system that rivals global leaders and breaks the long-held monopoly of the U.S. GPS technology in meteorological applications.

The announcement came at a State Council press conference on meteorological progress under the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025). Officials said China has built an integrated land–sea–air–space observation network, comprising nine Fengyun satellites, 842 weather radars and more than 90,000 ground stations.
