Tesla's Shanghai energy storage megafactory, which began operations in February, has achieved more than 95 percent domestic sourcing for its products. The facility, Tesla's second energy-focused gigafactory after Lathrop, California, produces the Megapack system and is designed for annual capacity of 40 GWh. Together with Lathrop, total output reaches 80 GWh.
Energy storage has emerged as Tesla's second-largest growth driver. Last year, Tesla deployed 31.4 GWh globally, up 113 percent, and expects installations to rise at least 50 percent in 2025. In the first quarter, output surged 156.6 percent to 10.4 GWh.
Vice President Mike Snyder said the Shanghai plant would ramp up production to serve more markets. Hundreds of Megapacks have already been exported to Europe and Oceania, and deliveries to Chinese commercial clients have begun.
China Kangfu International Leasing announced the country's first grid-side Megapack project in Shanghai's Lingang area, with a total investment of 4 billion yuan. Phase one will deliver 300 MWh this year to support grid balancing and electricity trading.
