Shenzhen, a major tech hub in south China’s Guangdong Province, has established three dedicated offices to accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence (AI), new energy vehicle (NEV), and biomedical industries. These offices will run in relative independence of the existing government structure.
Shenzhen, home to tech giants like Huawei and DJI, has made the development of new industries a priority. The AI, NEV, and biomedicine sectors are emerging as key drivers of the city's economic growth.
The AI industry office, tasked with accelerating AI development, aims to create more application scenarios for AI technology. In 2023, Shenzhen’s AI industry output surpassed 300 billion yuan, a 21.1 percent increase compared to the previous year.
The NEV office will focus on advancing intelligent driving technologies, including securing driving permissions for vehicles with autonomy levels of L3 or higher, and boosting automobile exports, according to Tang Shangxing, deputy director of the office. Shenzhen, home to NEV leader BYD, saw its NEV production exceed 1.73 million vehicles last year.
In the biomedical sector, the city has set up five industrial funds totaling 16.5 billion yuan (about 2.32 billion U.S. dollars) to support growth. The sector’s added value reached 13 billion yuan in the first half of 2024, marking a 10.6 percent increase year on year.
