At a Lenovo-hosted event focused on artificial intelligence (AI) last week, CEO YANG Yuanqing confirmed that an AI PC is on the horizon for next year.
“Lenovo aims to be a leader in the era of large AI models and we will base our investments on this premise,” he said.
Future of computing
Yang believes that while large models are important, terminal devices are needed to communicate with these large models. Currently, the primary way users communicate with large models is through the cloud, but this method is still very inefficient.
In Yang’s view, the future of computing will be concentrated on terminals, and the evolution of hardware will occur rapidly.
Possible rebound next year
The PC market slumped this year, with shipments in decline for most manufacturers.
Yang believes that the process of clearing excess inventory accumulated during the pandemic has concluded, and next year, the PC market will rebound. “I believe it’s possible to see year-on-year growth this quarter,” he said.
A billion is not enough
As a company that provides computing services externally, Lenovo needs to adapt and provide new products, demanding significant investment in R&D, with at least US$1 billion (7 billion yuan) earmarked for this purpose over the next three years.
“US$1 billion is not too much, but rather, it’s far from adequate,” Yang told Jiemian News.
